My Bio

There is barely a day that goes by where I am not in awe of the beauty of the Welsh landscape around me. In the relatively short time I have lived in Wales, I’ve explored a fair bit. I love being out in nature, whether it’s wandering the trails of the many majestic forests, relaxing on the shorelines of the lakes and reservoirs, taking in the views from atop the Brecon Beacons, or walking stretches of our incredible coastline.

Every season has it’s own inspiration to offer — fresh new foliage, luminescent in the hazy morning light in spring; deep blue skies with white fluffy clouds in summer, fiery displays of autumnal trees in autumn, and sunbeams through dramatic clouds following winter showers.

As an ex-professional photographer, I have a huge collection of photos I’ve taken over the years that form the basis of my works. I constantly take photographs when out and about capturing new ideas and inspiration for my art.

My work is my attempt to present how I see the world – through painting both sweeping vistas and epic skies but also the smaller more subtle displays of nature’s beauty. I want viewers of my work to experience not only the awe and wonder but also the sense of peace and tranquillity I’ve felt at being present in the scenes I paint. I hope my paintings convey the magic of Wales and inspire others to take time out and explore for themselves.

Back again

After yet another hiatus, this one lasting from late summer 2020, I'm back creating art again. Trying to stick to a daily practice of picking up my materials and doing something. It's about finding that balance because I tend to veer from not touching my art for months on end, to creating a swathe of new pieces. If I can just find that sweet spot somewhere in the middle I'll be happy. I discovered that rather than pulling out the easel and oil paints and trying to finish pieces I started last year, I instead built momentum by simply taking a pen to a sketch book. I'm going carry on with this for a while, get the creative muscles warmed up and see what happens.

Woken up feeling like I've got a cold coming several times over the past couple of weeks - the time that I've been using oil paints. I figure it's the turps irritating me, so going to give walnut oil a try as a brush cleaner.

Good to be Back

It feels good to be back on Deviant Art again. I used to be on here as a photographer, but my photography days are now behind me.   I feel I’ve reached a turning point with my art - I’ve let go of my perfectionism. This has allowed me to find value in simply doodling with pleasing colours and shapes. A simple, landscape that looks like it was drawn by a child - that’s fine - it’s the fact that I’ve done ‘something’ that’s important to me now.   Before, I wouldn’t upload anything until I considered it finished - which is a death knell for a perfectionist. I’m now more inclined to uplo
